Good morning.  This year’s musical, “Legally Blonde, Jr.,” officially opens tomorrow night at 7:00.  Mr. Demko and Mr. Witham have divided the students into two casts; grades 5 & 6 and grades 7 & 8.  The fifth and sixth graders perform Friday night at 7:00 and Saturday at 2:00.  The seventh and eighth graders perform tomorrow at 7:00 and Saturday at 7:00.  Hope you can make at least one of the performances!

We started today off with the screening of “Screenagers,” a short film about the impacts of “screen time” that kids are confronted with today.  Teachers were given discussion topics to talk over with students after the viewing.  Warning: the one class I visited during the discussion seemed fixated on that we parents are not always good role models when it comes to screen time.  I know that my daughter will remind me of that tonight….

Next Thursday (2/2), the Gustavus Wind Orchesthra from Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota will be visiting Gilford giving workshops to both the 8thgrade and high school bands.  They will then present a free concert that evening at 6:00.  We are looking for a few more host families to host 2, 3, or 4 college musicians just that one night.  If you are willing to help out and/or want more information please email either Janet Breton or Lyvie Breton.  You can also sign up here to help out with the pot luck dinner (these items would need to be brought in by 4:00 on the 2nd

Congratulations to the following students who have qualified for the regionals in the National History Bee:  Michael Kitto, Henry Stow, Peter Christensen, Emma Tierno, Matt Farrah, Colby Smith, Patrick Gandini, Kendall Jones, and Timmy Jagusch.  Also, advancing to the regionals in the National Geographic Geography Bee are Jack Farrah, Jack McLean, and Jacob Guay (school winner).  And, finally, kudos to our 6th grade math team for taking first place at their last mathalon meet!!

This week’s Middle Years* tip:  Study Hangout – Studying with friends can be motivating for middle schoolers.  Suggest that your child and their study mates hand out at your house and divided their work into pieces, then explain the parts to each other. They might have each person read a section in a textbook or review separate topics in their notes.
