Good afternoon.  Many of you are probably getting ready for the Pats to take on the Bills in a little bit.  I hope to finish and send this email in time for you to read it before you settle into “the zone.”

There are three attachments/links to this email for your information.  One, has the December edition of the Gilford Parks and Rec newsletter.  The other is the agenda for Tuesday night’s School Board meeting and the third is a link to the Volunteer Steering Committee’s effort to assist the school district in making sure that everyone has a merry Christmas by purchasing gifts for those in need.  Just follow this link to the Angel Tree Sign-Up to do you part in spreading joy!

Upcoming Volunteer Fingerprinting and Orientation Clinics are as follows:  December 5 (8:00am-9:00am) at the SAU Office for fingerprinting and the 15-minute orientation; and on December 12 from 6:30-7:30 at the GES Library for additional orientation sessions.

Recently, our 8th graders sent letters and care packages to our troops serving in the Middle East.  The effort was spearheaded by Mrs. Nicol and Mr. Bowler (retired Air Force).  Mr. Bowler heard back from his son, who is serving over there now, that they received the packages.  He noted that “besides a fresh pair of socks and a variety of snacks, the people are excited about reading the letters and he feels confident that most will write back.”  What better way to make the holidays better for all?

This week’s tip from the “Middle Years”  Help Wanted*  When your child is stumped about a concept or a homework problem, teachers want to help.  Plus, asking for assistance shows that your tween cares about her work.  Encourage her to seek help confidently with this tips. When to get help:  Her questions may have an easy-to-find answer.  Suggest that she check her textbook and notes or call a classmate.  If that doesn’t work, she should approach her teacher.  How to ask:  Your child might wait until the teacher is free and say, “I’m having trouble with my essay topic.  Can you help me?”  Or if the question pops up after school, she could email, “I don’t understand why I got this algebra problem wrong.  When is a good time to stop by?”

Other important events this coming week:

  • Wednesday = Early Release (12:20); No Homework Group

  • Thursday/Friday = Report cards will be distributed by the end of the week.

  • Thursday = Budget Committee Meeting on School District Budget (6:30) at Town Hall

  • Friday = Boys A/B Basketball (3:30/4:30); Girls A/B Basketball at Newfound (3:30/4:30)

Thank you and I hope you have a good week.

Peter
