Good afternoon. I hope you have a fun and safe First Night planned for Tuesday evening. Seeing that I lead a terribly exciting life, I’ll be in my chair trying (and failing miserably) to watch the Ball drop in Times Square. Life is good.

District News:

As you probably recall, the school district is taking part in the “Portrait of a Learner” initiative. This program fosters 21st century skills that our learners need in order to thrive in our complex and ever changing world. The District (with input from students, staff, community & business members, and parents) have chosen 4 attributes from which to measure students' progress; Innovate, Self-Direct, Collaborate & Critically Think. Students will start to see and hear about this pilot program this trimester; this will not impact their grade at all nor will be on their report cards until next year. One way to look at it is that this will potentially replace the Effort and Conduct data on next year’s report cards. More to come as we work through the pilot.

Choose Love Update:

Our “Choose Love” program is off to a great start! Our Choose Love Teams met briefly before vacation to give feedback on their first of 5 sessions. Here’s some of the feedback:

They admit that there are kids who sometimes don’t have anyone to play with at recess or sit with at lunch and this will remind all kids to include others as well as reach out to kids who are sometimes alone.

They’d like to meet more often in their Choose Love Teams.

They love just being able to have a conversation with their peers and their leader/teacher about stressful times that may come up. They like being able to hear others concerns as well as other perspectives on situations that arise.

They like the small group size.

They would rather talk than write in their journals.

They liked making heart maps and saying what we are grateful for

Some have even used breathing techniques they learned to help lower their anxiety.

8th Grade High School Transition:
