Good afternoon.

Even though I was not surprised at all about yesterday’s decision to not have students return to school this year, I was still emotional about it. I am especially sad that we will not have a proper farewell for our 8th graders. I know that the staff feels the same way. But we have no choice other than to move forward; and we’ll do just that….

I do still plan to try and pull off some of our typical end-of-year events remotely (keep your fingers crossed):

Yearbook - for 8th Graders only

Silver Hawk Award Ceremony - hopefully next Friday

Talent Show

8th Grade Moving Up Day

I am in the process of developing a way to report academic progress during this competency based education transition. Because our current software does not allow for this, we have to create our own to be emailed or snail-mailed home. This would most likely be in the form of a progress report sometime in May and a final report card in June. Teachers are keeping track (other than just completion of assignments) of each student’s progress in their classes. If you have any questions about how they're doing, please don’t hesitate to email them. As I have said before, I would much rather have conversations about academic progress than work completion (you and your child can get that information on Visions).

For incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders please have them fill out two surveys that have been sent to them recently regarding Band/Chorus and French/Spanish for next year. Also, there is a survey for all current middle schoolers regarding “how’s it going” in terms of their academics. I would love to have their feedback.

At some point soon, the District will come up with a plan for allowing students to get their “stuff” from their gym and hallway lockers. Stay tuned.

I recently read an article written by a national teacher of the year. Her gist about all of this is that we must understand that this is not “regular” education now but instead it is “emergency” education. So true.

We miss your kids. Badly. Please take care of yourselves and your family.
