09-03-2020 Remote Learners Updates

Good evening everyone. We have finally fine-tuned the daily schedule for our Remote Learners! The schedule is below but also wanted to give you some additional information first:

If you have not scheduled a time for next week, please do so by following the instructions at the end of this email. This will be a time for you to pick up your child’s Chromebook and, possibly, any additional supplies from our Remote Teachers.

Next Friday, September 11, our Remote Learners will Google Meet with their teachers during their regularly scheduled time. The purpose of this is for our remote learners to meet their teachers, go over covered curriculum, class expectations, etc. In all likelihood, these “meet and greets” will not last the entire class period.

Remote School, like the In-Person School, begins fully on Monday, September 14.

School Pictures: We will need to have a picture of your child. This can be done one of three ways: Come in on School Picture Day (TBD) or come in on Retake Day (where there will be fewer students needing pictures or send in a picture of your child. I will let you know those dates as soon as I do.

If you are in need of a “hot spot” for internet access, please let me know as soon as possible; we have a very limited supply.

You will notice in the schedule below two things:

One, there are blocks of time when your child is not “scheduled.” We did this to accommodate staffing restraints and to give students time to eat lunch or even have a “study hall.”

Two, Band and Chorus is happening on Friday mornings for all grades. Much like the In-Person learners, students will be “pulled” from their other classes for 30 minutes or so to work with Mrs. Beyrent and Mrs. Sanborn. They will get the same time of instruction as the performers in school as they can only practice for 30 minutes at a time due to the COVID-19 safety protocols for Band/Chorus.

Also, Mrs. Beyrent is asking 5th & 6th grade band students to purchase a “Standard of Excellence Red Book 1” and 7th & 8th grade band students to get the “Standard of Excellence Blue Book 2.” If you have questions, please feel free to email her.

The Unified Arts 7-Week Rotation will look like this:

Grade 5 = World Language, Music, Computer, Multimedia Arts

Grade 6 = Music, Computer, Multimedia Arts, World Language

Grade 7 = Computer, Multimedia Arts, World Language, Music

Grade 8 = Multimedia Arts, World Language, Music, Computer

I will also be sharing with you a Physical Education program that Mrs. McLane has developed for the Remote Learners to track their exercise

As Remote Learners, you still have access to your counselors. For grades 5 & 6, it is Chantelle Moynihan and for grades 7 & 8, it is Mike Neveln.

Teachers will “meet” with students each and every day. Attendance will be taken. Either Mr. Walsh or I will contact home if/when students do not show up for class; just as we do here in the building.

The lessons will vary from day-to-day just as they do here at school. We typically don’t “talk at” students for an hour straight. There will be time when they are working on their own, maybe even times working with a “remote partner,” watching a video (either by the teacher or another resource), etc.

We will follow the same rules at school when it comes to Dress Code, Behavior, Tardy to Class, etc.

When in class during the Google Meet, the area at home should be free of distractions, organized and all learning materials immediately on hand. Also, students should be “on camera” and not “hiding” behind an avatar.

As we go through the first trimester, I will share with you other recommendations that will help make the learning experience better for students. For now, I think I have said enough. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
