09-11-2020 Homework Group Info and More!

Good afternoon.  I was very impressed and pleased with how well the students adhered to our COVID-19 safety guidelines.  Quite honestly, I am simply amazed at their “mask-wearing stamina.”  The same can be said for our staff; talking through the masks all day is very challenging.  I keep reminding myself, students and staff that we need to treat this as an “adventure” instead of an “ordeal.”

Homework Group is going to begin on Monday, September 21.  It will look very different this year as long as we are in “all this.”  Here’s how it will look with a start time of 2:30 and an end time of 3:30:

  • Mondays in the library (capacity of 22) with Mr. Schiff
  • Tuesdays in 482 (capacity of 11) with Mrs. Bettoney

  • Wednesdays in the library (capacity of 22) with Mr. Schiff
  • Thursdays in the library (capacity of 22) with Mrs. England

Next week, I will set up a “sign up” to reserve spots and email you the link to sign up for a spot.Rationale for limited capacity is that there is a lot of one-on-one and small group with between the students and the teacher so we need to be extra cautious with the social distancing

  • Students will NOT be able to ride the elementary bus home as they have done so in the past due to limited capacity

  • And a reminder that this is not intended as a child-care service like they have at the elementary school.  Students are expected to be doing their school work and not causing a disruption; if so, they will be asked to leave..

Next week, we will start our NWEA testing in the areas of English/Language Arts, Math and Science.  It will be important that students come to school with the Chromebooks fully charged.  We will use the results to better fill the gaps in student learning that may have transpired over the past 6 months.  Our Remote Learners will also be taking the NWEAs; we are still working out the logistics for that to happen.

Our student-athletes are allowed to keep their athletic equipment in the girls/boys locker rooms instead of carrying them around with them all day.  In order to do this safely, we have come up with the following guidelines:

  • Face masks must be worn

  • No loitering; students should change and use the bathroom quickly and promptly leave.

  • Access the locker room using the following schedule:

    • 2:20-2:30 = Soccer teams

    • 2:30-2:40 = Cross Country and Field Hockey teams

    • 2:40-2:50 = Volleyball teams

There are two attachments in this email.  One is  a letter from Mrs. Beyrent regarding how we will conduct (no pun intended) middle school band this year.  The other a letter regarding depositing money for school lunch from our food service director, Jonathan Dupuis.

Alas, we are still experiencing growing pains from our transition to a new student information system (Alma).  Just please be aware that what you’re seeing on Alma may not be accurate.  If you have any questions or need some help troubleshooting, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will make sure that it gets into the hands of someone who can assist you.

Upcoming events next week:

  • Monday, September 14 = School Board Meeting (6:00)

  • Tuesday, September 16 = GSD Policy Committee Meeting (7:30am)
  • Friday, September 18 = Boys A/B Soccer at WRMS (4:00/5:00); Girls A Soccer (4:00); A Field Hockey (4:00); A/B Volleyball at WRMS (4:00/5:00)

I know I speak for the entire staff when I say that we feel so much better now that we have kids to teach again whether it be in-person or remote.  Life is good again.  Have a great weekend!

Take care,

Peter
